Intestinal absorption of iron is not regulated by daily liss of iron.
Infact, it is regulated by following factors –
Recent dietary intake of iron
State of irom stores in the body
State of erythropoiesis in the bone marrow.
Iron once absorbed is never lost except in case of menstruation!!
Factors that increase iron absorption
Vitamin C – vitamin C forms complex with iron and converts it to ferrous state. This state of iron is more easily absorbed by the intestines.
Factors decreasing iron absorption
These form insoluble complexes with iron, thereby making absorption of iron difficult.
